Very interesting.. the religious perspective seems to permeate children’s education. Do you have any information on the first book for children on making and maintaining gardens… I have some old ones and they to have a religious perspective, one even written by a parson.

Glad you found the post interesting and thanks for reaching out! I ran a search in WorldCat for juvenile literature on gardening, and I used the date filter to look at some of the oldest titles that came up. One of the oldest was this book–which seems to blend the theme of gardening with Christian catechism:

I would also suggest posting your question to LHRT’s ALA Connect membership list, which will send it out to all LHRT members. I know we have several members who specialize in the history of children’s library services. If you’re not a member of LHRT, I’ll be happy to post the question for you and send you responses. Would you like me to do that?
      All the Best,
      Brett
